Back in Feb I had this major freak out when it came to defining my style & I know it’s a first world problem but I was having a mini crisis with when it came to what was my personal style? Now I’m fully aware that being in a style rut is pretty much the most basic blogger thing I could have been in but hey it felt terrible to me.
I decided to take a step back, stop worrying about putting outfits together & just wear what the blooming hell I wanted. I think doing that saved my bacon a little cause I’ve come back feeling like I know what my look is. Having personal style is important (well at least to me) & I wanted to know what mine was. You guys probably could have worked out my personal style just from a quick scroll but I was feeling so crappy about it I wasn’t seeing a look.
I personally feel the people making it in this industry have a style or a voice that stands out. That you can recognise so easily & that it was makes them great. Feeling like I didn’t have a solid look was pretty much getting me down & I was trying to hard to pinpoint a style that I wasn’t even enjoying the fashion side of blogging.
Taking a step back & realising personal style isn’t about one look or a set rules gave me the freedom to experiment. I had the chance to work out what clothes I really liked wearing & realised that my personal style pretty much consisted of a few key things.
I feel like my personal style is pretty much; slogan tees, denim bottoms, converse & biker jackets. Obviously that is the simplified version but if I was to grab an outfit on the go they would be the items I would reach for. My personal style is very simple & as of recent I’ve realised that’s okay.
Being a blogger sometimes you feel like you need to stand out, you can’t be like every other girl (or guy) on the street. Your outfits have to be a little more interesting & you have to have some larger than life personality. Of course there are people in this industry that fit that mould but I don’t think that’s the majority.
I personally feel we don’t all stand out & that is what makes us relatable. Our audiences are everyday people so why wouldn’t we be? I think that translates to our personal style & our audiences are built around people who like that style too.
My style is ever evolving but I do feel as I get older I will always opt for my favourites. I love a basic jeans & tee combo. I am forever going to want to wear converses over uncomfortable pretty shoes & I’ll always want to layer up a biker jacket even if it’s not the warmest.
I love mom jeans & shorts because they are the most comfortable denim I have ever found. I like them plain, patterned or ripped so hey I have diversity. Of course I’m not giving up my high waisted skinnies cause damn they flatter. I love a culotte & I love to play with smart casual looks. I have stand out pieces & I also have boring plain tees that I’ll wear everyday.
I found the style that I like & it’s built up of elements that are my favourites. I will happily announce I am a proud outfit repeater! I love watching my personal style evolve as I grow older & I can’t wait to see my sassy elderly self trying to rock a slogan tee & converse combo.
What does personal style mean to you? Can you define yours or are you still working on it?
